CVOR Compliance Checklist — Ontario O.Reg 424/97

Every commercial vehicle operating in Ontario must satisfy all five requirements before hitting the highway. MTO officers verify these at every Level I roadside inspection.

  1. 1

CVOR Number — Both Sides of Cab

Your Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration number must appear on both the driver-side and passenger-side of the cab. Cannot be covered, obscured, or removed while the vehicle is in service.

    O.Reg 424/97, s.4(1) — Highway Traffic Act
  2. 2

    Minimum 76mm (3-Inch) Block Letters

The CVOR number and operator name must be displayed in block letters with a minimum character height of 76mm (3 inches). Cursive or script fonts do not comply — block lettering only.

    O.Reg 424/97, s.4(2) — minimum letter height
  3. 3

    Contrasting Colour

Lettering must be in a colour that clearly contrasts with the background cab colour. White letters on a white cab do not comply. If your cab is dark, use white or yellow vinyl. Light cab: use black or dark blue.

    O.Reg 424/97, s.4(3) — colour contrast requirement
  4. 4

    Operator Name and Municipality

In addition to the CVOR number, the operator's legal name and municipality (city or town of business address) must appear on both sides of the cab at the same minimum 76mm height requirement.

Highway Traffic Act, s.16 — operator identification
  5. 5

Permanently Affixed — Not Magnetic or Removable

Compliance markings must be permanently affixed to the vehicle. Magnetic signs that can be removed do not satisfy the regulation. Pre-cut pressure-sensitive vinyl with permanent adhesive meets this requirement.

    O.Reg 424/97, s.4(4) — permanent display required

MTO checks at Vineland (QEW at Hwy 24), Fort Erie (Hwy 3 at International Bridge), and Port Hope (Hwy 115 at Hwy 401) — inspect your markings before they do. A non-compliance citation affects your CVOR safety rating and can trigger additional inspections on every future crossing. Pre-cut kits ship in 2 business days and apply in 30 minutes.

Ontario Trades — Before and After

Three real scenarios from Ontario operators who ordered CVOR lettering kits. Same truck. Same day. Compliant in under an hour.

Niagara Roofing Contractor — Pickup Truck
Before

Unmarked white F-350. No CVOR number, no company name on cab doors. Pulled over at Vineland scale on QEW. Level I inspection, compliance violation noted — CVOR safety rating hit. $500+ fine risk plus out-of-service time.

After

CVOR compliance kit ordered, shipped in 2 days. White lettering on dark cab — applied in 25 minutes per side. Next Vineland inspection: passed. CVOR number and company name visible at 30 metres. Back on the road, no violations.

Hamilton HVAC Fleet — 3 Vans
Before

Three Transit vans freshly repainted. Old magnetic CVOR signs removed at the paint shop. Vehicles not yet compliant — could not legally run on Ontario highways until lettering was re-applied per O.Reg 424/97.

After

Three CVOR kits ordered same day. Arrived in 2 business days. Owner applied all three vans in a single Saturday morning — under 90 minutes total. Fleet returned to service Monday fully compliant. No inspector contact since.

Port Hope Landscaping — Box Truck
Before

Cube van purchased used, previous operator name still on the doors. Wrong CVOR number for new operator. Flagged at Port Hope scale on Hwy 115. Told to re-letter before next trip or face continued violation records.

After

Old vinyl removed, new CVOR compliance kit applied with correct number and company name. Custom truck lettering kit added same week: company name, phone, municipality. Passed next Port Hope inspection. Fleet now runs clean on Hwy 401 corridor.

New Truck. New Van. Fleet Expanding. Get It Lettered.

Custom vehicle lettering ships pre-cut and ready to apply. Company name, phone, website, and logo cut to your exact specs in premium outdoor vinyl rated 7+ years. Pickup trucks, cargo vans, cube vans, and box trucks. No minimum order — single unit or full fleet.

After a Fleet Repaint — CVOR Lettering Must Go Back On First

Any fleet repaint removes existing compliance lettering. Under Ontario Regulation 424/97 (Highway Traffic Act), your vehicle cannot return to Ontario highways without CVOR number and company name displayed on both sides of the cab — minimum 76mm (3-inch) block letters, contrasting colour. MTO officers at Vineland (QEW), Fort Erie (Hwy 3), and Port Hope (Hwy 115) check these at every Level I inspection. Order your CVOR kit before the vehicle goes to the paint shop so it ships the same week. CVOR kits from Compliance Lettering →

How to Order Fleet Lettering — The Right Way

For a clean, compliant result the first time. Follow this sequence whether you are lettering one truck or twenty.

  1. Measure Your Vehicle

Measure the door panel width and height you want to cover. Note any curves, body lines, or hardware that affects placement. Take a photo of both sides of the cab with a tape measure visible.

  2. Order CVOR Kit First (if commercial)

If your vehicle requires CVOR lettering, order that first. It ships in 1–3 business days. Have it on-hand before the branding graphics are applied. CVOR goes on last — on top of or alongside any wrap or base graphics.

  3. Order Your Lettering Package

Select your package based on vehicle type. Provide your company name, phone number, and logo file. Premium outdoor vinyl ships pre-cut, pre-spaced on application tape. No design fees for standard layouts.

  4. Clean the Surface Thoroughly

Before application: wash the panel with soap and water, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol. Remove wax, polish, or protective coatings from the application area. Temperature should be between 10°C and 35°C for best adhesion.

  5. Apply and Photograph

Follow the included instructions. Use the squeegee at a 45-degree angle. Remove the transfer tape slowly. For CVOR markings: measure the finished height to confirm 76mm minimum. Photograph both sides for your records.

Fresh Paint? Add Lettering the Same Day.

A cab repaint is the best time to upgrade fleet graphics. Pre-cut vinyl lettering kits ship next day from Niagara and apply directly on new paint — once fully cured (24 hours). CVOR compliance kit and custom branding graphics ordered together ships as one package. Pairs perfectly with any repaint job, any colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do fleet vehicle graphics last in Ontario?
Premium outdoor vinyl lettering on a commercial truck lasts 5–7 years in Ontario conditions. Longevity depends on UV exposure, cab colour, and whether the surface was properly prepped before application. Reflective vinyl used for CVOR compliance markings can last 7+ years. Cut vinyl lettering outperforms full printed wraps on working commercial vehicles — printed wraps are more vulnerable to pressure washing and fuel splash.
What compliance lettering is required on Ontario commercial vehicles?
Under Ontario Regulation 424/97 (Highway Traffic Act), every commercial vehicle operating in Ontario must display on both sides of the cab: (1) CVOR number — minimum 76mm (3 inches) tall, block letters, contrasting colour; (2) operator name and municipality — same requirements. These must be in place before the vehicle operates on Ontario highways. MTO officers check these markings at every Level I roadside inspection.
How much does commercial vehicle lettering cost in Ontario?
CVOR compliance kits start at $49. Custom vehicle lettering (company name, phone, logo) for a pickup truck or van starts at $299. Full fleet graphic packages for box trucks range $499–$1,200 depending on panel count and design. All prices include pre-cut premium outdoor vinyl and application tape. No professional installer required for standard applications.
Do I need a professional installer for fleet lettering?
Not for standard cut vinyl lettering. Pre-cut kits include pre-spaced lettering on application tape, a squeegee, and step-by-step instructions. Most truck door lettering sets take under 30 minutes per side. Large-format printed wraps that cover full panels benefit from professional installation to avoid edge lifting and air bubbles.
After repainting a truck, what compliance lettering needs to go back on?
Under Ontario Regulation 424/97, after any fleet repaint the following must be re-applied before the vehicle returns to service: (1) CVOR number — both sides of cab, minimum 76mm (3 inches) tall, contrasting colour; (2) Company name and municipality — HTA s.16. These must be on before the vehicle hits Ontario highways. Order your CVOR kit from Compliance Lettering before the repaint is booked so it arrives the same week.
