Ontario Regulation 424/97 is clear: any commercial vehicle repaint removes existing compliance markings. Before the vehicle returns to service, CVOR numbers, company name, and municipality must be re-applied. Here's what's required and how to get it done.
Ontario Regulation 424/97 (Commercial Motor Vehicles — under the Highway Traffic Act) sets the marking requirements for commercial vehicles operating in Ontario. Section 6 specifically addresses identification markings that must appear on the exterior of the cab.
When a commercial vehicle is repainted, all existing vinyl lettering is removed or painted over. The regulation requires the markings to be in place before the vehicle operates on a public highway — there is no grace period for a freshly painted vehicle.

Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Enforcement Officers check commercial vehicle identification markings at every Level I roadside inspection under the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP). A vehicle without visible CVOR and company name markings can be placed out of service on the spot.
The scale facilities where inspections are most common in Ontario include:
A Level I inspection that reveals missing identification markings will result in a notice of violation under the HTA. Repeated violations affect your CVOR score and can trigger carrier reviews.
